Canadian Wholesale Trade Rises in December

The value of wholesale trade in Canada rose more than expected for a second consecutive month in December, with gains in the motor vehicle and parts sector, Statistics Canada data showed Thursday.

The 2.0 percent gain surpassed economists' expectations for a small increase of 0.2 percent from November revised up to 1.9 percent. Volumes increased 1.8 percent in December.

Motor vehicles and parts saw the largest increase in dollar terms, the 10.6 percent surge to $ 11.26 billion.

Vehicle sales were the highest ever recorded, while there was also an increase in exports and imports of vehicles and parts.

sales in the food, beverage and tobacco rose 1.3 percent, the second increase in three months.

overall, the highest sales were recorded in the four sectors of the seven, representing 66 percent of wholesale sales.
