U.K. Retail Sales Fall As Colder Weather Curbs Clothing Demand

UK retail sales fell in February after surging more than two years during the previous month after-Christmas sales.

Falling 0.4 was lower than the decline of 0.7 percent expected by economists in a Bloomberg survey. Clothing and footwear decreased by 0.4 percent, with the weather delay spring purchases and summer clothes, the Office for National Statistics said in a report Thursday.

Although the figures show a decline over the month, sales were up 3.8 percent compared to the previous year. Consumer spending helped boost the U.K. economic growth amid low inflation and rising employment. The Bank of England said on Wednesday household spending remained "resilient" in recent months.

Excluding fuel, retail sales fell 0.2 percent in February from January and were up 4.1 percent on the year.
