Canada: Job Growth In Part Time

Jobs grew by 22,800 and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.1 per cent, Statistics Canada said Friday in Ottawa. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News projected an increase of 8,000 jobs and a stable unemployment rate, according to the median forecasts.

The Canadian labor market is among the relatively few bright spots in an economy pummeled by ongoing collapse of raw materials. Even so, hiring and investment may be hampered over the next few years by losses in the energy-producing regions, Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz said in a speech Thursday.

The report brings total employment earnings for 2015 to 158,100, a growth rate of 0.9 percent, which was faster than the rate of 0.7 percent over the previous two years. Full-time employment accounted for 151,000 new jobs last year.

The part-time employment increased by 29,0 in December, while full-time positions decreased by 6,400. Workers designated by Statistics Canada employees decreased by 17,500. The category of self-employed increased by 40,300.

Health care and employment of social assistance rose by 16,500 over the month, followed by education with 15,400 new jobs, Statistics Canada said.

The unemployment rate rose 0.4 percentage points last year, as more people sought work, Statistics Canada said.
